Why Suffer? Gods, Theodicy, and the Female Factor in Ancient Thought

Institut: VHS - Die Wiener Volkshochschulen
Bereich: Soziales

Kursbeschreibung

The question of theodicy, that is, the reasons there is suffering in the world, has preoccupied humans already from the ancient times. In this presentation, we will be examining and discussing what the ancient Greeks thought about the reasons for suffering, as well as why such suffering was more often than not linked to the actions of women (e.g., the myth of Pandoras box). Some comparisons with the Jewish Bible will also be made to shed light on this age-long problem. Ass.-Prof. Dr. Nickolas P. Roubekas studied Theology, Religious Studies, and Social Anthropology of Religion in Greece, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. He is Assistant Professor at the Department of Religious Studies, University of Vienna.
