Fake it till you Mine it: german Miners in Spanish America, 1500-1800

Institut: VHS - Die Wiener Volkshochschulen
Bereich: Soziales

Kursbeschreibung

Being good at something often brings status and influence. Moving abroad because of that expertise can strengthen those advantages even more, especially when success depends on specialized skills. German miners in the early modern period were no exception. Using mining knowledge developed in Central Europe, they travelled to Spanish America and promoted their own methods of mining. But, as this talk shows, their migration to Mexico and Peru between 1500 and 1800 was far more complicated than a simple success story. Dr. Gabriele Marcon is a Senior Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute for Social and Economic History at the University of Vienna. He is the principal investigator of the project Mining the Earth, Roaming the Globe funded by the Austrian Science Fund FWF. Science Vortrag in spanisch mit englischen Folien
